Stephanie Shannon
Sergeant-at-Arms
Stephanie brought the meeting to order and there was no mistaking that today was St. Patrick's Day.  The room was green and we were all Irish this morning.  Following are Stephanie's written comments:

It is always so inspiring when individuals come together for a common cause or a common purpose. The current events in Ukraine has resulted in people from around the world coming together, each in their own way and yet everyone having the same united purpose…to help.
Rotary is guided by the same principles, come together to help others. 1.4 million friends, leaders and problem-solvers unite to take action to create positive and lasting change around the world and in our communities.
The Rotary International Vision Statement says it so well.
“Together, we see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change – across the globe, in our communities and in ourselves.”
As caring Rotarians, be proud of being a part of something special…Be proud of all that we get to do while being a part of something special…Be proud that we are united and committed to creating lasting change in people’s lives.

She then turned the meeting over to President Kathryn.

President Kathryn Scroggin

President Kathryn welcomed our Zoom participants and started with an Irish proverb.  "There are good ships and wood ships, ships that sail the sea, but the best ships are friendships, may they always be!”

She then spoke about our challenge of continuing down the path of giving and caring and having conversations about where our Club's energies should be directed.  And that we all remain united in our resolve to make a positive difference.  To that end, Kathryn announced that our Club was donating $1000 for the refugees in Romania per District Governor Dana Moldovan's previous request for help in support of the Ukrainian crisis.  Kathryn said that there would be a short Board meeting after this morning's meeting to discuss other ways we can help as well.

Kathryn said she was devoting some time at next week's meeting to Table Talk, looking for Club project ideas and causes to support.  She said that this unity is about coming together and helping those in need.  Kathryn then asked Steve to play a piece of video as an example of unity.  Here's a description of that video from Google:

In this moving video, 94 violinists from around the world come together to accompany violinists in Ukraine, some in basement shelters, in a Ukrainian folk song. London-based violinist Kerenza Peacock coordinated the effort: 'In the space of 48 hours, I received videos from 94 violinists, representing over 25 different countries.

Kathryn's quote this morning is from Helen Keller.  "Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much."

John Tolson opened this morning's Invocation with an Irish blessing, partially quoted here, " May the road rise to meet you, May the wind be always at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face, The rains fall soft upon your fields...."

Carolyn's business associate, Vlada

Below is a note from Carolyn Boucher concerning her business associate in Ukraine that she mentioned in this morning's meeting.  Thanks Carolyn, every bit helps.

Here is the information about the young woman who has been working for my business from the Ukraine.

As I mentioned during the meeting, I know she would appreciate any kind words from our club members as these are very hopeless times for her and her family. I also know that she will share any messages she receives with family and friends.

Her name is Vlada (short for Vladyslava).
Her email address is:

Carolyn Boucher passed along the following Vocational related email she received and asked us all to spread the word:

Kathryn reminded us about the upcoming Virtual District Training Assembly on March 26th.  All Avenues of Service will need to attend and she encourages new members to attend as well.  It's a great way to learn more about Rotary.  See Kathryn for details.

Bill Klepper organized a yard cleanup last Saturday for a Neighbor in Need.  Mary Paseta, shown above, was the one who did all of the work.  Some other members showed up but, without Mary's direction nothing would have been accomplished.
Mary's crew, if you can call them that.

Bill did say some more help is needed this Saturday, March 19th to finish up the job.  It won't be more than an hour or two.  If you can help, meet at Jerry's at 7:00 AM.  If you can't make Jerry's, meet at the site at 1417 Church St.

Vince gave us an update on where things are at with the trailer at Dave's Towing.  We now have two weeks to either move or rid ourselves of the trailer.   Vince is heading up an effort to figure out which way to go but will need help next week to move and organize the remainder of the material regardless of how it works out.  Let Vince know if you can help.

Bill Klepper is organizing our next Bolio event.  Mark your calendars for April 10th at Harley's Valley Bowl, 10:00 AM.  Bill said that teams are being formed and that the participation of the Special Olympic athletes is up in  the air at this point due to covid.

A very good cause and a great opportunity to show your stuff.  And, if you don't have stuff to show, the worst score will be rewarded.
Bill, why are you wearing Jesus's shirt?

Tim Gray, along with Demi Fox and Dan Jordan, displayed some of the marketing support they've come up with.  They have posters, banners, flyers, you name it, for us all to display.  The Sponsors Brochure is available as well.

To recap, The Happy Face Music Festival will be held on Saturday, May 28th which is Memorial Day weekend.  It will be a half day event at the Rancho Simi Park with no more than 2000 tickets being sold at $50 per ticket.  It will follow a minimal concept with Food, Alcohol (both beer and wine), and Entertainment provided with only those 21 and over being admitted.

Carolyn Boucher is looking for photos of favorite past Club projects that can be displayed at the Street Fair booth.  Please follow up with Carolyn.

Again, the Simi Street Fair is on Saturday, April 30th.  The plan is to have a booth highlighting Team Ginny as well as the various events and activities that our Rotary Club is involved with.  She's looking for help and ideas.  Come work the booth with your best Rotary Elevator Speech!

Steve Pietrolungo came in wearing all black today and wanted to explain why.  He said that his deceased father would never wear green on St. Patrick's Day because "we're Italian and so was St. Patrick!"  Apparently, Steve said, St. Patrick was Roman (St. Patrizio?) and was kidnapped by Irish pirates and brought to Ireland as a teenager.  So, in protest of this egregious act, Steve's Dad never wore green on St. Patrick's Day.  Further to the story, Steve's Dad passed on March 17th so to honor his Dad, Steve doesn't wear green either.  You have to love those Italians!

As a peace offering though Steve did bring some green carnations for everyone.

Our Guest Speaker today was Ms. Jeannie Liss with Rancho Simi Recreation and Park District.  She's been with them for over 16 years now and, as of January 2022, she manages the Strathearn Historical Park and Museum.

Jeannie gave us a Powerpoint presentation on the Strathearn Park.  She brought us back to the days of the Chumash, the Spaniards and the Mexican acquisition of the surrounding area.  Then up to the 15,000 acre purchase of the Strathearn Ranch in the late 1800's.  She shared photos of some the original, local buildings now on display at the Park.  If you haven't been to the Park, Jeannie encouraged anyone interested in local history to come and visit.

Though you can't see it, Bill wore a kilt today in honor of St. Patrick's Day.  Boy, any excuse to wear a skirt, I mean kilt.  Problem is kilts are Scottish.  Oops....  But, Bill did answer the age old question regarding what is worn, or not, underneath.  He answered by saying the chairs were really cold.
Julia deserves a medal for putting up with this mug for 32 years.  Congrats John!
Welcome back Ryan Valencia!  Good to see you.
Congrats Jesus on 9 years with the Club!  And Bill has your shirt by the way.

Our meeting next week, March 24th, will be at the Best Western.

======================
Please remember to bring a friend or an acquaintance to our next meeting.  This is a GREAT way to grow our membership!  And the guest's breakfast is taken care of.
