Stephanie brought the Zoom meeting to order. Following are her comments:
Good morning! I just returned from a great conference discussing the topic of Risk Management, Loss Prevention and Liability with some of today’s leaders in restaurant security (e.g. Starbuck’s, McDonalds, etc.). During the conference, I was fortunate to experience a keynote speaker, FBI Special Agent George Piro who had interrogated Saddam Hussein after his capture in Iraq.
During his presentation, Agent Piro shared with us the ways in which he gained Saddam’s confidence over time and through unique situations that they shared during their time together and how he eventually obtained the information that he worked to obtain for the United States related to the horrific atrocities that he did to the people of Iraq, if he actually had weapons of mass disruption, and relationships with Al Qaeda and Osama Bin Laden.
After spending upwards of 7 hours a day, every day with Saddam and being the only person that Saddam was allowed to talk to during his detention time, a relationship was formed. Agent Piro was there to obtain information, but through the interview process, Piro and Saddam developed a mutual respect for each other; and FBI agent and the most horrific leader of modern time, developed respect for each other. In fact, when it came time for Agent Piro to tell Saddam that he would not be talking to him again, Saddam openly cried because he valued their talks. Saddam also told him that he knew him better then his own sons and thanked him for their time together.
This presentation made me reflect on what we have talked about since Kathy began as our President and what we, as a Club, have discussed throughout her tenure; treating each other with dignity and respect. We may not share the same values, thoughts or opinions and we may agree at times, disagree at times or agree to disagree at times, but we should always be able to treat each other with dignity and respect.

President Kathryn Scroggin
President Kathryn wished everyone a Happy Easter and Passover and then reminded us of last week's challenge of telling the Rotary story loudly. And the need to understand and respect causes and people we don't always agree with. To echo Stephanie's words, we all deserve dignity and respect.
Kathryn then had several announcements:
-There will be virtual District Training on April 18th that will be beneficial to both new members and longer term members looking to fill leadership positions. Kathryn said you will learn not only about Rotary but about yourself as well. See further in the Bulletin for details.
-Kathryn participated in a Group 5 meeting Wednesday evening and came away with some events being planned by the various Clubs.
-The Noontime Club is organizing an event at Mt. McCoy this Friday and Saturday in which the names of those departed are read aloud. For more information please call 805-814-8237.
-The Noontime Club is also organizing a Softball Tournament. Please go to their website if interested in participating.
-The Sunset Club is organizing a Tea Party at the Grand Vista on May 1st. A Trip to Ireland is the prize with 200 tickets being sold at $100 per ticket. Go to their website for more info.
-The Group 5 Dinner has been pushed back until June or July. Stay tuned.
-This is Awards Season which means that Avenue of Service Directors are looking for information for the awards. Please reach out if you have pictures or projects you can share. The filing deadline is May 13th at 5:00 PM.
Picking up from last week, Kathryn ended by saying that her every day heroes are the members of this Club. She said that she respects each and everyone of us for both our similarities and our differences.
Kathryn's weekly quote is from the Dalai Lama. "Whenever you practice gratefulness, there is a sense of respect toward others".

Valley View and Sinaloa Middle Schools are looking for volunteers to help out on Portfolio Day. Steve P. sent along the following contact information for those that can help out our two Middle Schools with Portfolio Day.
This email from Mr. Hall sent out to previous volunteers spells out the details for Valley View:
Dear Community Member,
Valley View Middle School is inviting you to an important event for our school by taking on the task of interviewing our phenomenal eighth grade students. As part of their culminating activity from middle school, students are expected to create a portfolio and present it to a community member. Our Portfolio Day is on Wednesday, May 18, 2022. The portfolio will review what they have completed in eighth grade as well as detail a career that our students have shown an interest in. The students will impress you with their portfolios, their communication skills and their readiness to advance to the next level of their educational careers.
We would like to have a number of community members from all careers to join us to interview our students. We have morning times available from 8:00 am to 12:15 pm, afternoon times from 11:55 am to 2:35 pm or you can volunteer all day if you are able to. For those that are able to volunteer on May 18, we will provide you with information as to where to park as well as a complimentary lunch. Your ability to volunteer for our students means a lot to us, this is an important day for our 8th graders.
If you are able to volunteer, please RSVP with Debbie Edwards at (805) 520-6820 ext. 1306 or email or Debbie at debbie.edwards@simivalleyusd.org. We thank you in advance for the difference you are making for our students.
