Bolio was a great success this past Sunday at Harvey's Bowl.  Bill Klepper (left), who organized it, said over $2500 was raised which gets us one step closer to eradicating polio forever.  All three Simi Rotary Clubs participated and a good time was had by all.  Bill doesn't usually like his photo taken but he made an exception for a good cause.

Steve P.'s son, Tony, got the trophy for highest score - 253!.  And, like any good father, Steve took full credit for the feat since Steve taught him how to bowl.

John Bagnall received a trophy as well - for lowest score.  Let's just call it a trophy for showing up.  And, no cash prizes John for showing up.
The Four Way Test graphic above was forwarded by Jim Lowry.  Jim took it out of a South African Rotary Club's magazine he gets regularly and thought it would be nice to share.  Thanks Jim!  If anyone has anything to share in the Bulletin, Rotary related of course, please pass it on.

President Kathryn Scroggin

President Kathryn talked about being grateful for the opportunities the Club offers all of us and related a visit she had to Simi Toyota recently.  While waiting, she saw the District 5240 magazine and read the magazine's description of our Club as being all about service to the community and listing many examples of such service.  Articles in the magazine by Laura Berger about the YES! program and John Baxter about Rotarians lunching with High Schoolers are examples, Kathryn said, of programs that are being replicated by other Clubs.  Kathryn encouraged us all to participate in Club events whenever possible.  Lots of opportunities coming up with Carolyn's Street Fair Booth and the Happy Face Music Festival.

Kathryn then asked several Club members to come up and let us all know why they were grateful for Rotary.

First up was Bob Bibb who said he was grateful for the friendships he's developed.  Friendships that offer nothing but unconditional support and ask for nothing in return.  Ryan Valencia was grateful for the girlfriend that he found as a result of joining Rotary.  And also the possibilities Rotary gives him to help others which gives him a sense of purpose.  Deb Davila, like Bob, was grateful for the friendships she's developed.  There is just a bank of people she can depend on she said.

Kathryn's weekly quote is from John F. Kennedy.  “As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words but to live by them”.

Back to the Rotary magazine that Kathryn referred to in her opening.  The problem with her story is how she came about possessing the magazine?  Surely she didn't abscond with it?  Rather troubling to say the least.  Has anyone had anything come up missing at prior meetings?

Here's a note from Bill Klepper about some graffiti cleanup.  While not always successful, Bill's plan is to leave the site with about the same number of volunteers that we started with.  Bill tries not to leave anyone behind.

In Celebration of Earth Day....This Saturday we will work with the Parks Department on Graffiti clean up.

We will be going to the cave/Swing on the Chumash trail...we will be taking 4WD vehicles thru the rock peak entrance...but once parked  it is still a strenuous hike up to the cave(about another 30 minutes) ...

The view and experience is stunning .,.but did I say Strenuous...

The parks will supply sandstone paint and sprayers...

we meet 6:30 a.m. Jerrys coffee shop for breakfast then head out...

Hope to get 2 vehicle loads of Rotarians.....

Doug Landon, left, accepted a check from Bill Klepper on behalf of the Club for a new dryer at the Samaritan Center.

Bill had to leave right after this due to a call from his agent.  That Toyota commercial has put his acting career into hyper mode!  Don't forget the little people who got you where you are today Bill!

Mike Kort from the Sunset Club visited us this morning with a request for volunteers.  His Club is hosting a Tea Party and is in need of help at the event from Noon until 4.  Please call 805-613-7277 if you can help.

Kathryn called Bill Klepper and Peter Ciciari up to accept some awards.  Our Club was awarded two banners for the year 2020-21, the year Bill was president and Peter Rotary Foundation Chair.  The banners are for attaining the status of Every Rotarian, Every Year Club (one of only 4,000 clubs worldwide) and a banner for getting in the 100% Foundation Giving Club (one of only 4,600 clubs worldwide).   Congratulations Bill and Peter!

Valley View and Sinaloa Middle Schools are looking for volunteers to help out on Portfolio Day.  Steve P. sent along the following contact information for those that can help out our two Middle Schools with Portfolio Day.

Valley View Middle School  May 18
Principal   Michael Hall

Sinaloa Middle School  Date TBD
Principal  Brad Torti

This email from Mr. Hall sent out to previous volunteers spells out the details for Valley View:

Dear Community Member,

Valley View Middle School is inviting you to an important event for our school by taking on the task of interviewing our phenomenal eighth grade students.  As part of their culminating activity from middle school, students are expected to create a portfolio and present it to a community member.  Our Portfolio Day is on Wednesday, May 18, 2022.  The portfolio will review what they have completed in eighth grade as well as detail a career that our students have shown an interest in.  The students will impress you with their portfolios, their communication skills and their readiness to advance to the next level of their educational careers.
We would like to have a number of community members from all careers to join us to interview our students.  We have morning times available from 8:00 am to 12:15 pm, afternoon times from 11:55 am to 2:35 pm or you can volunteer all day if you are able to.  For those that are able to volunteer on May 18, we will provide you with information as to where to park as well as a complimentary lunch.  Your ability to volunteer for our students means a lot to us, this is an important day for our 8th graders.
If you are able to volunteer, please RSVP with Debbie Edwards at (805) 520-6820 ext. 1306 or email or Debbie at debbie.edwards@simivalleyusd.org.  We thank you in advance for the difference you are making for our students.

Sincerely,
Michael Hall

Cindy Jacoby sent us all the following email and link for the SurveyMonkey Kathryn referred to regarding how we see our Club progressing.

Please take the time to complete the survey online in the link below.  Your opinion and input matters!

Thank you!

Tim Gray reported that fundraising continues doing great, exceeding initial goals.  Tim reminded us to let Tim or John Tolson know if you need or want any paper tickets.  Tim left us with Sell, Sell, Sell, Like, Like, Like and Share, Share, Share!

Lastly, please look for the Volunteer Sheet to be coming out soon.  Lots of volunteers will be needed and there will be an all hands meeting.

To recap, The Happy Face Music Festival will be held on Saturday, May 28th which is Memorial Day weekend.  It will be a half day event at the Rancho Simi Park with no more than 2000 tickets being sold at $50 per ticket.  It will follow a minimal concept with Food, Alcohol (both beer and wine), and Entertainment provided with only those 21 and over being admitted.

Today's Guest Speaker was Mr. Scott Mosher, CEO of Boys and Girls Club of Moorpark and Simi Valley.  Scott gave us a very informative presentation on the Club.  Most interesting was the role the Club played during the school shutdowns, stepping in where the schools could not.  He said that membership, while not quite what it was, has climbed steadily these past two years from 559 to 800 and now to 1309.  Following is a description of the Club off of their website:

The Boys & Girls Club of Moorpark & Simi Valley provides a safe way to learn and grow in a fun environment. We work to bring out the best in each young person, inspiring and enabling all children to reach their full potential as productive, caring, and responsible citizens.

We offer diverse activities under five-core program areas: Character & Leadership, Education & Career Development, Sports & Recreation, Health & Life Skills, and the Arts.
