President Laura started by welcoming our Zoom participants and giving her elevator speech about Rotary for the benefit of our guests. She then thanked all of those who helped with the Relay for Life event (see below) and to Annika Sumby for coordinating the run at the Samaritan Center along with John Baxter and Eric Kaufman who assisted.
She also thanked Fernando Estevez and Union Bank for their generous $1,000 donation to our Oktoberfest and, of course, Dan Jordan for his great marketing skills that helped us triple our attendance from last year. And, speaking of the Oktoberfest fundraising event and all of our fundraising events for that matter, Laura raised an issue that really came to light at this year's Oktoberfest. The issue being the lack of volunteers to help out. These fundraisers we hold, Laura said, are our lifeblood. Without them, we won't have the funds necessary to provide for the community in the manner that we, and the community, have become accustomed to. Bottom line, we need more volunteers, plain and simple, to keep these fundraisers going. Laura likened our Club to a family and when the family is in need, members should come to help out. It is not sustainable to have the same members doing the bulk of the work every time. So, if it is at all possible, please plan on helping out in the future.
Lastly, Laura reminded us about the Mid-Year Retreat on Saturday, November 5th at 10 AM. It will be held at 99.1 The Ranch. All Board members will meet and others are encouraged to attend as well. This is a great opportunity to share your thoughts about the direction that you'd like to see the Club going.

President Laura talked more about the Simi Smiles Peace Project, an integral part of the requirements for being a Peacebuilder Club. This first project will involve Valley View Middle School students.
Laura painted some 1000 rocks (half all black and half all white) that were dropped off at Valley View this morning. The students will then paint the inspirational pictures on them next Wednesday, October 26th between 8:00 and 8:30 AM. Members are invited to attend this painting work shop and are encouraged to help paint the rocks. These inspirational rocks will then be placed in Corriganville Park at a later date.
Demi Fox arranged the donation of the rocks by Simi Pacific Building Materials. Thank You Simi Pacific and Thank You Demi!
Laura also asked us toSAVE THE DATE for a Group 5 meeting on Sunday, December 4th at the Sunset Hills Golf and Tennis Club. It will be a brunch starting at 10 AM and will feature Howard Berger, an Academy award winning make up artist as the Guest Speaker. Tickets are $30 and the event will include all 5 local Rotary Clubs from Moorpark (2) and Simi (3). Laura would really like a good showing from our Club and will be sending out another invitation. She then warned us that if the invitation was not responded to (either yes or no), she would be calling you, and no one wants to get that call.
As an added treat, Howard will be applying make up on Herschel Berger (first cousins), a process that can only benefit a mug like Herschel's. You don't want to miss that!
Carolyn Boucher is looking for help to man the booth at the upcoming Simi Valley Street Fair on Saturday,October 29th. This is a great opportunity to get the Rotary name out there. She's looking for help with the Set Up at 7:30 AM and then shifts manning the booth from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM and 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM as well as the Teardown at 4:00 PM. See Carolyn if you can assist or email her at:
Larry thanked everyone who helped at the Oktoberfest event and said he received good feedback at the Wrap Up meeting this past Tuesday. These comments will be passed on to next year's Oktoberfest Chair, Demi Fox, to help prepare for an even better event. Good Luck Demi!
Larry is close to getting the final numbers but is confident that the profit will be north of $20,000. He also reminded everyone that the raffle tickets are still available until October 31st for the European trip. Please see Larry if interested.
Larry received a standing ovation for his leadership of such a successful Oktoberfest and had the coveted Royal Rotarian robe placed on him by Laura. Dr. P then showed a video of the event prepared by Dan Jordan and also a collage of pictures.
Here's a picture of the Donor's Banner referred to in earlier Bulletins. This will be hung at all meetings and events for the next few months. Larry acknowledged that some names are missing and will rectify that situation quickly.
Laura thanked Kathy Scroggin for organizing the Club's booth at The Relay for Life event. The event raised more than $45,000 for the charity with our Club contributing toward that amount with a Team participating in the Relay that was headed by Laura. Below are some pictures.....

Ms. Jennifer Swenson, president of Adventist Health Simi Valley (AHSV), talked to us this morning about the hospital. Jennifer has held the position of president since 2015 and, since joining, has focused on growing services to keep patients close to home for care.
She gave a very comprehensive review of AHSV from its beginning in 1965 to where it is now. To say it has come a long way since 1965 is a big understatement. Following are some representative slides from her powerpoint presentation......
Please remember to bring a friend or an acquaintance to our next meeting. This is a GREAT way to grow our membership!
