President Laura welcomed a large crowd today along with a lot of Guests.  Lots of energy in the room.  She then thanked Thomas Herdering for the use of his facilities at 99.1 The Ranch for our Retreat last week.  Thank You Thomas!

Laura also reminded everyone that we are DARK next week, November 24th due to Thanksgiving - NO MEETING.  And, she asked that you try and join the next meeting on December 1st as we will be voting on Larry Borovay's president-elect position.

Also, please be sure to download the ClubRunner App.  It provides access to everything Rotary and is extremely helpful in keeping up with what's going on with the Club and contacting other Club members.  A link to the App is provided at the end of this Bulletin.

Thank You Thomas!

Bill Klepper is coordinating a Happy Face Hill cleanup this Saturday, the 19th.  We will meet at 7:00 AM at Jerry's Coffee Shop and then head up to the site afterward.  Bring a weed wacker and rake if you have one.  And, if you plan on spraying the dye, wear some old shoes.  Lastly, if you eat breakfast at Jerry's, make sure you bring the exact amount of money needed to pay for it.  Don't rely on Bill for the change.  A recent audit of those past transactions has revealed some irregularities.

Leigh Seaton is coordinating our Quarterly Blood Drive on Thursday, January 5. 2023.  Please schedule your donation with Leigh.  His email is:

Sophie Klepper had previously handed out the Volunteer Sheet for the upcoming Thanksgiving Dinner at the Senior Center.  It will be held on Wednesday, November 23rd.  Volunteers will be needed Tuesday evening, November 22nd at Monte Vista at 6:30 PM to help with the flower arrangements and to prep the turkeys as well as on Wednesday, the 23rd.

This is a Sit Down dinner with seating taking place at 4:30, 5:30 and 6:30 PM.  The Y's Men will start the grill early Wednesday with turkey carving commencing at 10:00 AM.  Set up inside will start at 1:00 PM.  Volunteers are needed for Set Up, Food Preparation, Serving and Clean Up afterward.  It's particularly hard to get people to help with the Clean Up, Sophie said, so if at all possible, please stick around for that.

The turkeys will be prepped at Monte Vista on Tuesday, the night before.  Also, Food Preparation Training will take place at Monte Vista at a time to be determined.  Stay tuned for that and Thank You (again) Dr. P.!

See email from Cindy Jacoby for the Sign Up Sheet and please respond by email to Matt Rowe with your choices. A copy of the latest Sign Up sheet is shown below as well.

Laura reminded us to SAVE THE DATE for the Group 5 meeting on Sunday, December 4th at the Sunset Hills Golf and Tennis Club.  It will be a brunch starting at 10 AM and will feature Howard Berger, an Academy award winning make up artist as the Guest Speaker.  Tickets are $30 and the event will include all 5 local Rotary Clubs from Moorpark (2) and Simi (3).  Laura would really like a good showing from our Club and will be sending out another invitation.  She then warned us that if the invitation was not responded to (either yes or no), she would be calling you, and no one wants to get that call.

As an added treat, Howard will be applying make up on Herschel Berger (first cousins), a process that can only benefit a mug like Herschel's.  You don't want to miss that!

Family of Rotary Holiday Evening and Concert
Saturday, December 10th

Geovanny Ragsdale said that there are now 8 seats remaining for the upcoming event on Saturday, December 10th.  You need to get your reservation in soon if you want to participate.  We will leave at noon and the concert is at 2 pm. This will include a trip to Los Angeles to enjoy a Master Chorale program with dinner afterwards.  Tickets are on sale for $50 per person and this includes transportation to and from the event.  See Kailey or Geovanny for more details.  You can RSVP on the following link:

A final headcount is needed so please RSVP ASAP to reserve your seat.  A luxury bus will be leaving from the Junkyard at 12:00 noon, returning around 5:30 PM.

The Los Angeles Master Chorale is the “the finest-by-far major chorus in America” (Los Angeles Times) and a vibrant cultural treasure. Hailed for its powerful performances, technical precision, and artistic daring, the Chorale is led by Grant Gershon, Kiki & David Gindler Artistic Director; Associate Artistic Director Jenny Wong; and President & CEO Jean Davidson. Its Swan Family Artist-in-Residence is Reena Esmail.

Carolyn Boucher, Vocational Service Co-Chair, presented the Simi Sunrise Service Above Self award to Mayor Keith Mashburn as well as Vocational Recognition awards to Demi Fox's assistant, Maricar Maestre and to Herschel and Laura Berger's staff of Elena Barajas, Alma Suggett and Rachel Skelton.
Mayor Mashburn with his well-deserved award.  Mayor Mashburn has been Mayor of Simi Valley since 2018.  Prior to that, he was a city council member from 2012-2018 and sat on the Planning Commission from 2007-2010.  In addition, he has sat on too many boards and committees to list.  Born and raised in Simi Valley and graduating from Simi Valley High School in 1968, he has truly dedicated his life to this community.  In his spare time, he worked for the Ventura County Fire Department and retired in 2005 as a Battalion Chief.  He'll be moving to Texas after his term is up to, in his words, chase after his grandkids.  Good Luck Mayor Mashburn with your next adventure in life.
Maricar works out of the Philippines so received her award via Zoom.  Demi could not say enough good things about Maricar's work ethic, intelligence and desire to please Demi.
Left to right, Laura, Alma, Elena, Rachel and Carolyn.  Hard working ladies who are indispensable to the Berger's office.  Congratulations to all!

Karen Thompson is organizing her yearly Target Shopping Spree.  It will be held Saturday, December 10th at 7:00 AM at the Target store at 2907 Cochran Street.

Karen said that since we have 58 homeless High School kids in our school district, this year we will be sponsoring them.  Each shopper will be provided $250.00 and, with the Rotary money and the money promised from the PTA, we have enough for 20 kids to shop.  However, Karen put out a request to see if anyone can sponsor all or part of the $250.00 in addition to what is already committed.  Please let Karen know ASAP by texting her at (805) 469-3871 or by email at KarenYourRealtor@aol.com.  Chas can bill you through your Rotary account.  Once she has confirmed how many kids she can sponsor, she'll have a Sign Up Sheet for Helpers and Shoppers after Thanksgiving.

District 5240 Conference November 18-20

Santa Barbara Hilton Beach Resort

633 East Cabrillo Blvd.  Santa Barbara

Here's a link to the Conference:

Part of the District Conference program in Santa Barbara includes a presentation by our own Dorina Timbol about the YES! program, a program that Dorina was instrumental in starting.  It was so successful and well received that District 5240 has established it District-wide and asked Dorina to do a presentation on it since she is the District Chair.

Her presentation will be on Sunday, the 20th and will include two students.  Dorina needs a volunteer to drive two people up to the Conference that Sunday and bring them back.  Please see Dorina if you can help out.  Her email is timbolsca@msn.com.

Jake Finch previously gave us an update on the Gift Card program she initiated with the Club last March.  These were the Gift Cards that were donated to help Simi Valley school kids and their families in need.  Jake gave us some stark statistics.  She said that there are 214 children in K-12 that are homeless here in Simi with 58 of those in High School.  In addition, there are 63 Foster Children, 27 of whom are in High School.

The good news is that, since last March, 115 Gift Cards have been donated totaling $4,875 with $1,850 of that being disbursed to those in need. Over $3,000 of that amount was from our Club alone!  Our Club is AWSOME!

More help is always appreciated Jake said and that while Gift Cards to Kohls and Target are helpful, she said that she's also looking for Gift Cards to stores like Aldi and Smart & Final as well.

The Simi Valley Police Foundation is hosting a charity event on Saturday, December 10th in support of Spark of Love.  See Bill Klepper for details.

Mike Kaminsky spoke to us this morning about the music industry. Mike has over 20 years of experience successfully guiding the careers for multi-platinum artists across the world with many #1 records.  The largest selling over 15 million singles.  He is an expert at the intersection of the business world and the creative world.  Representing artists, songwriters, music producers and film composers his clients have placements in feature films, commercials and video games.  His company has received both a Billboard Music Award and global hits with its writers and producers with artists such as Maroon 5, Lil Jon, Katy Perry, Ke$ha and more.

Mike described himself as a risk manager/business manager and, really, a CEO of a team that combines the business element of entertainment with the creative element.  Artists hire him to turn them into a business.  He said artists will sometimes have a hundred or more people working for them and his job is to manage that team.  A very interesting line of work.  And the good news for those of us who grew up on vinyl, Mike said vinyl is coming back!
