Mr. Frederick St-Laurent
Mr. St-Laurent is the husband of Sylvie St-Laurent, one of our newest Club members. Fred is the Director of Composite Engineering for Easton Baseball, now Rawlings Sporting Goods. He earned his degree in Composite Materials and Mechanical Engineering in Montreal in 1994. He started his career developing the first ever composite hockey shaft in 1994 and then switched to developing the first composite baseball bats in 1998 and has never looked back.
Before Easton was acquired, they were producing about 50,000 baseball bats a month. That has doubled to 100,000 a month with Rawlings. Some interesting items of note are that high end, composite baseball bats cost $299 to $350 each. And high end composite baseball bats for college, specifically Fast Pitch Women's Softball cost upwards of $500 each. And the beautiful thing about this industry is that the more expensive the bat, the shorter is its life span. Planned obsolescence taken to new height!
He said his goal has always been to design revolutionary composite designs that optimize the sporting goods performance. To that end, he has jointly developed over 25 patents that have been issued and about another 10 that are pending. Fred said that these patents are key to maintaining a strong IP portfolio and protecting your technology. His personal goal is to keep developing high performance baseball bats and to keep putting smiles on the faces of kids and adults when they hit that long ball!
A quick side note. No Steve, we really don't want to see where your bruises are from playing baseball. Way too much information!
Fred St-Laurent
