Stephanie Shannon
We all saw a side of Stephanie Shannon this morning that was, well, frightening.  It's a side that probably came in handy in her prior profession.

Following are her comments from this morning:

This past weekend, next year’s board members met at Laura and Herschel’s home for our board retreat to discuss different ideas and strategies for this coming year and I am excited with what we can accomplish as a club.

I also wanted to let you know that Kailey Craig and I have volunteered to support the Happy Face Music Festival with the People Power part of the event. We know that events like the music festival can only happen because of the people who support it through their time. This year’s event is on SATURDAY, MAY 28TH with gates opening at 1 pm and closing at 7 pm. This is a one-day event with great music, food, beverages, and friends and is designed to bring Simi Valley back together in a big fundraising way. Mark you calendar, save the day, and plan on supporting this important event that represents this club. As soon as I get the schedule times for the position, Kailey and I will be reaching out and asking everyone to help in any way that you can. If we don’t hear from you, I will hunt you down and be the nightmare that keeps you up at night.  If you are smart, you will email me as soon as possible if you want to work a specific assignment before they fill up. And yes, we can be bought!!

Yes, very frightening isn't she?

President Kathryn Scroggin

President Kathryn opened by also thanking Laura for hosting the incoming Board retreat at the Berger's and welcoming our Zoom participants.  She then briefed us on several different items:

 - 42 members responded to the Club survey Cindy Jacoby circulated regarding the direction of the Club desired by members.  The results will be reviewed at the May 12th Board meeting and then brought before the joint Board meeting on June 16th to be discussed.

 - The Ukrainian flag will continue to be displayed at our meetings as a reminder.

 - The final amount of the second donation to the Ukraine refugee crisis will be decided at the next Board meeting.

 - The storage trailer was sold!  Thank you very much Vince Dulcich.

 - The Scholarship Committee finished reviewing scholarship applications from 55 graduating seniors from 7 local schools.  The committee will now decide on how to divide the scholarship funds.

  - Kathryn received a Thank You note from the Simi Valley High School PTSA for our Club's support for the Every 15 Minutes program.

 - Kathryn encouraged us all to look for opportunities to volunteer that fit your needs.  Lots of them coming up!

She finished by talking about her challenge to us about living by the words we utter as Rotarians.  To accept each other for who we are, despite any differences that might exist.  And, finally, to look for opportunities to lend a helping hand, especially to those who are different than you are.  Build that bridge and live the Four Way Test.

Kathryn's weekly quote is from Audre Lorde.  “It is not our differences that divide us. It is our inability to recognize, accept, and celebrate those differences."

Jake Finch came to us with two requests this morning.  Her first  had to do with helping out the Simi Valley Unified School District students that are in need of assistance.  School District resources have been stressed to the limit and help is needed to replenish those resources.  That help can come to the District in the form of Gift Card donations for gas, groceries, etc. at places like Target and Walmart.

Jake's second request was more directed.  Jake said that the District just enrolled their first students, 8 and 14 year old girls, who have fled Ukraine with their mother.  The family came here with basically the clothes on their back so are in need of everything.  Gift cards to Kohls and Target would be very helpful.

If you can help out, please reach out to Jake.

This email from Mr. Hall  spells out the details for Valley View:

Dear Community Member,

Valley View Middle School is inviting you to an important event for our school by taking on the task of interviewing our phenomenal eighth grade students.  As part of their culminating activity from middle school, students are expected to create a portfolio and present it to a community member.  Our Portfolio Day is on Wednesday, May 18, 2022.  The portfolio will review what they have completed in eighth grade as well as detail a career that our students have shown an interest in.  The students will impress you with their portfolios, their communication skills and their readiness to advance to the next level of their educational careers.
We would like to have a number of community members from all careers to join us to interview our students.  We have morning times available from 8:00 am to 12:15 pm, afternoon times from 11:55 am to 2:35 pm or you can volunteer all day if you are able to.  For those that are able to volunteer on May 18, we will provide you with information as to where to park as well as a complimentary lunch.  Your ability to volunteer for our students means a lot to us, this is an important day for our 8th graders.
If you are able to volunteer, please RSVP with Debbie Edwards at (805) 520-6820 ext. 1306 or email or Debbie at debbie.edwards@simivalleyusd.org.  We thank you in advance for the difference you are making for our students.

Sincerely,
Michael Hall

their school work to a member of the community.
It's a great opportunity to make a difference
in a person's life.

Tim Gray, Dan Jordan, Larry Borovay and Bill Klepper all  reported in with a status of the Festival.  Everything is moving forward very nicely and they are expecting a sell out.  Tim reminded us to let Tim or John Tolson know if you need or want any paper tickets.  Tim left us with Sell, Sell, Sell, Like, Like, Like and Share, Share, Share!

Also, please, for your own safety per Stephanie's opening remarks,  get back to Stephanie or Kailey for the Volunteer position you want to fill.  Lots of volunteers will be needed and there will be an all hands meeting.

To recap, The Happy Face Music Festival will be held on Saturday, May 28th which is Memorial Day weekend.  It will be a half day event at the Rancho Simi Park with no more than 2000 tickets being sold at $50 per ticket.  It will follow a minimal concept with Food, Alcohol (both beer and wine), and Entertainment provided with only those 21 and over being admitted.

Larry Borovay, Dan Jordan, Bill Klepper and Tim Gray (left to right) - the guys organizing The Happy Face Music Festival.  This is a big job with a lot of moving parts.  Thanks for all of your hard work!

Today's Guest Speaker was Mr. Thomas Herdering.  Thomas is a long time friend of Rotary both personally and as the Director of Community Outreach for the non-profit Community Radio station 99.1 The Ranch.  The Ranch is a very active and important part of our community involved in too many activities to list.  Thomas gave us a presentation on The Ranch with some of the following highlights:

 - The Ranch was the 2021 Non-Profit of the Year.

 - It covers east Ventura County as well as a portion of the San Fernando Valley.

 - The Ranch is a Non-Commercial - Community Radio and a Non-Profit 501(c)3.

 - It is heard in many different countries world wide with the most listeners in the US with Germany number two and then down to the Netherlands coming in at number 10.

 - The On-Air talent is a mix of both paid personnel and volunteers.

 - Funding is from sponsors including a who's who list of local  businesses.

The real winner from Thomas's presentation though was Bruce Bromberg.  Bruce won some movie tickets from Thomas after Bruce and Thomas discussed how The Ranch runs subtitles for its programs that are heard in foreign countries.  Very informative.
